Bern. Switzerland [Women Ministries EUD; APD; ADRA Germany; CD EUDNEWS]. Evelyn Brenda, born in Keya, living in Weiterstadt Germany, was nominated for her commitment for the „Deutscher Engagementpreis 2012" (German Prize for Engagement 2012).

Concerning her projects it was said that in Kenya many young women suffer from the results of genital mutilation and early marriage. Several times each year she visits her country of origin and makes an impact to help girls who flee in order to avoid mutilation or who suffer mentally or physically from its results.

Evelyn Brenda’s „Kajiado Rescue Centre“ gives young girls a safe place to live in. They not only find a new home there, but get food and clothing and can finish elementary school. By now nearly 200 girls have found a place in this centre in Kajiado. A long-term goal of the project is to improve and strengthen the rights of girls and to bring a change in cultural customs of mutilation of girls and forced marriages. With the support of the community, an alternative rite has been introduced in this home for girls to mark the passage to adulthood with a celebration.

In addition to this project Evelyn Brenda supports other children’s homes in Kenya with donations. Since 2012 she helps women who, as a result of mutilation and lacking medical treatment have become incontinent. Often these women have to live in complete isolation. Surgical help has already been made possible for twenty women by donations. At the same time this project provides education and rehabilitation in the villages. This engagement by Evelyn Brenda gives hope to affected women and is an important contribution to improve the situation of young girls and women in Kenya.

We herewith want to congratulate Evelyne Brenda for her nomination and thank her in the Name of Women’s Ministries and the Communication Department of the EUD for her engagement for the wellbeing of many girls and women.
