Friedensau Theological College mourns the loss of former lecturer

Johannes Mager

D.Min. (Andrews University, USA)

* March 22, 1929                 † May 5, 2019

Last Friday, Johannes Mager passed away at 91 years old, at the Friedensau retirement home. He was a lecturer in Systematic Theology in Friedensau from 1975 to 1981.

Johannes Mager was a Theology student in Friedensau from 1947 to 1950, before that, he worked as pastor in Berlin and then as a member of staff in various leadership positions in the Seventh-day Adventist Church in the former DDR. In 1974 he was appointed professor of Systematic Theology at Friedensau. During his tenure he received his Doctor of Ministry at Andrews University, USA (1982).

He was particularly interested in the work of the Holy Spirit and theology of the Sabbath. He expected much from his students and was himself a role model as a sharp thinker and highly-educated theologian. From 1981 until retirement in 1995, he served as Personal Ministries Director in the Euro-Africa Division of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Bern, Switzerland. Until 2003, he taught as esteemed guest lecturer in Friedensau, where he returned in 2011 – as he said himself, "rejoice in life and learn to grow old without complaining."

Our thoughts and prayers are with his children and their families.
