Palermo, Italy [Luca Alfano, ADRA Italy; EUD News]. On November 17, in Palermo, the local ADRA section has set up an Italian language course for foreign adults. That program comes from a strong need to provide a useful service of foreigners, that may help them on their path of social integration in the Italian territory.

The students come mostly from Ghana, both men and women, all workers: the high student attendance is a comforting fact that shows how this service is appreciated. This project has a great social value: in addition to studying Italian, both written and spoken, and to living moments of friendship and congregation, students are also addressed with issues related to civic education and daily life daily. The aim is to help them to learn new social dynamics in Italy.

The foreign students

The course takes place thanks to the work of two teachers, volunteers of the Migrants Center (a ten years old association in the territory of Palermo for the integration of foreigners in the areas of school, work, religion and civil), and two volunteers from the ADRA section of Palermo, in the role of project manager and assistant.

We hope that this activity will continue with the enthusiasm and participation found from the beginning, in order to achieve the goals for which it was founded.

The Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) was established in November 1956 by the Seventh-day Adventist Church to provide humanitarian relief and welfare. Originally called Seventh-day Adventist Welfare Service or SAWS, the name was changed to Seventh-day Adventist World Service in 1973.

ADRA is currently one of the leading non-governmental relief organizations in the world. In 1997 the agency was granted General Consultative Status by the United Nations, a unique opportunity giving ADRA added voice in the international community. In 2004 it assisted nearly 24 million people with more than US$159 million in aid. More than 4,000 ADRA staff members currently work in 125 countries. As new challenges and needs arise, ADRA continues to strive to realize its mission of reflecting God's love through compassionate acts of humanitarian service.
