Bern, Switzerland [ADRA; CD EUDNews]. The heavy rains are persisting in many parts of Germany, this is becoming the number one topic in the media. Some cities, particularly in southern and eastern Germany have been declared as disaster alert and in Passau the drinking water is scarce. What we usually watch on TV about what’s happening in distant countries, we now live it as a present reality. As early as 2002, Germany already experienced flooding of this kind – but now the level will probably rise even higher. Thousands of lives are in danger due to the floods - ADRA launches first aid.
Flood in Germany 2013: Victims desperately need help
In the past few days, floods devastated large areas, villages and towns in Bavaria, Thuringia, Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt. Basements were flooded, dams broke and some houses were torn apart. Schnaditz, a district of Bad Duben, was evacuated on Monday evening. In northern Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt, the situation remains tense, as in the next few days, the same flood waters from the Czech Republic are expected to enter Germany. So far, it is not sure how destructive the damage will be, but one thing is already clear: many individuals are either threatened or already devastated by the floods.
ADRA is active
Together with our local partners, ADRA Germany already leads in emergency care and assistance. Currently special dryers are being prepared for damaged buildings. Once the worst of the flood is over, ADRA can install the dryers in the homes. The plan is for each home to use it for 2 months. ADRA regional coordinator Anja Emrich is assisting on site. She was in the affected area until today trying to get an idea of the situation in order to initiate emergency care and assistance.
Memories of the Elbe River flood of 2002
Many people in the affected regions can still remember the terrible flood of 11 years ago. Even at that time ADRA was already involved with installing dryers. Today, relief service is running more smoothly, but damage will reach millions of dollars.
