Compassion in Action: The Annual Disaster, Famine, and Relief Offering

ADRA

Each May, the global church community transitions from prayer to tangible action through the Disaster, Famine, and Relief Offering. Rooted in the scriptural principle that when one part of the body suffers, the whole body feels the impact, this initiative serves as a collective reflection of the heart of Christ. By standing with the vulnerable and comforting the broken, the Church fulfills its mission to be a neighbor across all borders.

A Year of Global Impact

Through the unwavering faithfulness of supporters, the Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) has maintained a consistent presence alongside families facing crises both within Europe and across the globe. The following highlights demonstrate the breadth of this impact over the past year:

Belgium: In Brussels, consistent support has ensured that individuals experiencing homelessness receive high-quality, warm meals.

Spain: Following the devastating floods near Valencia, relief efforts focused on helping families recover and rebuild from significant property damage.

Portugal: In the wake of severe winter storms, ADRA provided practical relief—including food, hygiene kits, and roofing materials—offering a sense of solidarity to those enduring hardship.

Afghanistan: After the catastrophic earthquakes last summer, contributions provided essential supplies to families who had lost their homes and livelihoods.

Sudan: Despite the nation facing one of the world's most severe humanitarian crises, ADRA continues its decades-long commitment (since the 1980s) to provide education, healthcare, clean water, and emergency relief under extreme conditions.

Ukraine: During a winter defined by widespread electricity shortages, the provision of industrial generators allowed homes and care institutions to remain warm, safe, and illuminated.

The Call to Action: May 9th

On May 9th, local congregations worldwide will participate in the annual Disaster, Famine, and Relief Offering. This collection represents more than financial aid; it is a manifestation of justice for the displaced and a practical expression of compassion for the suffering.

Because emergencies are unpredictable, these funds are critical for institutional readiness. Whether facing an earthquake, flood, or conflict, the generosity of the Church ensures that ADRA is prepared to respond immediately, serving as a blessing to those in urgent need.

A Season of Prayer and Reflection

In the days leading up to the offering, the community is invited to engage in focused prayer for those living in crisis. Participants are encouraged to select one of the regions mentioned—such as Sudan, Ukraine, or Spain—and intercede for the families and relief workers on the ground.

By standing together, the Church demonstrates that love is most powerful when it is put into action.

"This offering is more than aid. It is justice for the displaced, compassion for the suffering, and love expressed through practical action." Joao Martins, Regional Director, ADRA Europe
