A pivotal Women’s Ministries training took place from 28th February to 3rdMarch 2025 at the Adventist Health Centre in the village of Banya, Bulgaria. The event was attended by participants from over 25 different cities and towns around the country and some even from abroad. Main guest-speaker of the training was Dagmar Dorn, Women’s Ministries Director at the Inter-European Division of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. Local experts also contributed to the event sharing their knowledge and experience on useful topics. The training aimed to inspire, educate, and empower women for ministry in their local congregations.
In a very authentic manner, Dagmar Dorn shared the Biblical perspective of Women’s Ministry and its role in the mission of the Church. The training covered a wide range of essential topics, including: History and philosophy of Women’s Ministries; Women in the Bible: exploring their tasks, talents, and God’s providence; Jesus’ leadership model; “Am I My Sister’s Keeper?”: Reclaim ministry for inactive members; Small Group Ministry; EndItNow Project: a campaign against violence; Discovering spiritual gifts, etc.
The sessions aimed to blend Biblical insights with practical tools for ministry. The training was based on a global SDA leadership program for women. However, only selected topics were included to provide foundational knowledge and practical know-how for immediate application in the local churches.
Dagmar was deeply moved by the enthusiasm and engagement of the attendees. "The women were eager to learn, actively participated, and expressed heartfelt gratitude," she shared, highlighting the positive atmosphere throughout the sessions.
Bilyana Valchinova, Women’s Ministries department leader in Bulgaria, provided additional context about the training and its impact, explaining that the need for it was far evident: “There hasn’t been a training like this in over 10 years. Leaders need ideas, experience sharing, and encouragement.” She acknowledged that domestic violence and creating successful small groups resonated most with the participants during the training, sparking meaningful discussions.
Participants shared their reflections, emphasizing the impact of the training:
Zlatka Ivanova from Nova Zagora: “I loved the training! Thanks to God, the organizers and the whole team. We learned many new things we can apply in Women’s Ministries. Thank you for the wonderful moments we spent together...!”
Iliyana Tsankova from the Bulgarian SDA Church in Vienna, Austria, also shared: “I just got home after a long journey, but I don’t feel tired because I’m so happy. This meeting gave me knowledge, peace, and calmness... May God guide and support us as we serve with His help. Be blessed!”
Elena Kertikova from Shumen, also expressed her gratitude for the wonderful experience: “I needed ideas and encouragement, and I received them! … Everything was excellent in every way!”
Reflecting on the work of the Women’s Ministries Department in Bulgaria, EUD representative, Dagmar Dorn noted a “great awakening.” She acknowledged that the Bulgarian team serves with great dedication to revitalizing the department and supporting women in the church. Nevertheless, the Ministry is facing challenges as in any other country. One of those is the need for local churches to be bold, try new approaches, and collaborate with other departments to address sensitive issues like domestic violence - a topic relevant both inside and outside the church. “Collaboration with Family Ministries, Youth, and other departments could give it greater impact," Dagmar stated.
A Shared Vision for the Future
Both Dagmar and Bilyana expressed hope for the future. Dagmar reflected on Psalm 68:11, “The Lord announces the word, and the (women) who proclaim it are a mighty throng,” as a reminder of the vital role women play in ministry. Valchinova envisions Women’s Ministries becoming a platform for personal development and impactful service.
This training marks a significant step toward empowering women in Bulgaria to contribute meaningfully to their churches and communities. With God’s guidance, the seeds planted during these sessions are expected to yield a rich harvest in the years to come.
This year the Women’s Ministries department in Bulgaria is focusing on personal growth and tailored ministry through initiatives such as: Publishing Biblical Heroines and Me Study Guide for small groups; Launching Her Story Digital Platform to address women’s issues with Biblical solutions; Hosting the National Women’s Forum as a talk show centered on personal stories and supporting local church leaders with necessary materials and ideas to develop further their ministry in place.
