The Second Global Summit on Religion, Peace and Security will take place from 29 April to 1 May 2019 in Geneva at the Palais des Nations, Conference Room XVII.
“This Second Global Summit, which is co-organized by the International Association for the Defense of Religious Liberty (AIDLR) and the United Nations Office on Genocide Prevention and the Responsibility to Protect (OGPRtoP), will focus on promoting and protecting the human rights of religious minorities, refugees and migrants, particularly in countries where they have been or are targeted as a result of the discourse of ultra-nationalist political parties and leaders” announce Dr. Liviu Olteanu, Inter-European Region (EUD) PARL Director and AIDLR Secretary General
In many countries where ultra-nationalist parties have emerged or are in government, their policies and political discourse have targeted in particular those who are perceived to be different, including on the basis of their religious identity as religious minorities, migrants and refugees. This has resulted in an increase in hate speech including by political leaders, and hate crimes targeting these population groups.
“The Second Global Summit is organized as a follow-up to the First Global Summit on Religion, Peace and Security, which took place in Geneva in November 2016” said Dr. Olteanu. The First Global Summit focused on fostering religious freedom and preventing violent extremism and atrocity crimes and highlighted the importance of enhancing collaboration among the “Dialogue Five” stakeholders proposed by the AIDLR, which include diplomats, politicians, religious leaders, academics and civil society representatives, to uphold freedom of religion and belief.
This Second Global Summit will be action oriented and focus on how the Dialogue Five’ stakeholders can enhance their collaboration to promote and protect the rights of religious minorities, refugees and migrants, including the right to freedom of religion and belief, in particular in ultra-nationalist contexts. “It is our belief that a discussion on this issue is timely in order to prevent an increase in discrimination and persecution along religious lines and to foster peaceful, inclusive and just societies” affirm Dr. Olteanu.
