The Berlin Waldfriede Adventist Hospital proudly celebrates its 105th anniversary since its founding. Bestselling author Corina Bomann eloquently chronicles the numerous challenges and tumultuous periods faced by the hospital in her account of its centennial development. The history of Waldfriede stands as a poignant testament to how divine providence has sustained and nurtured this institution over the years.
"When we stop and look back, we are filled with great gratitude for the guidance that God has given Waldfriede”, said Martin Knoll, spokesperson and chaplain of the hospital. The clinic has recently completed a comprehensive and ambitious restructuring program, necessitated by the significant rise in operational costs, the lingering effects of the coronavirus pandemic, and the non-reimbursement of medical services totaling approximately 15 million euros—an outcome of treating more patients than anticipated in the city’s healthcare plan. These factors have imposed severe financial strains on the hospital.
Under the leadership of CEO Bernd Quoss, the hospital management—supported by the board and the Inter-European Division (EUD)—made the decisive choice to pursue a protective shield procedure. This strategic move was ultimately sanctioned by the Berlin court following rigorous evaluations. The protective shield proceedings provide substantial financial relief, including the coverage of all wage costs, for three months, by the employment office, along with stringent conditions for restructuring and a favorable economic outlook.
“In three months' time, these measures will undergo meticulous review”, explained Quoß. He continued, “Recently, all creditors and relevant courts have unanimously acknowledged the efficacy of these strategies, expressing optimism for the future. Local newspapers and media outlets have celebrated this turnaround with headlines proclaiming, ‘Waldfriede is saved…!’”.
Bernd Quoss, CEO of Waldfriede Hospital, consistently credits the dedicated staff for their unwavering commitment during this pivotal restructuring phase. Thanks to his competent leadership, Waldfriede is maintaining the level of a world's premier hospitals by 2025.
Quoss commented: “The love of God and humanity is our driving force in all our endeavors. We aspire to provide those who seek our care with the highest standard of medical treatment while accompanying them as individuals, in line with our Christian values. We remain acutely aware that all our successes and the good that unfolds within these walls are ultimately the result of God's grace”.
