Paul Lee, an Adventist who is often linked to the award-winning London Adventist Chorale, was the featured soloist during the Royal Wedding performance of Stand By Me on Saturday. Lee performed as part of The Kingdom Choir in front of Meghan Markle, Prince Harry and about 600 guests at St. George’s Chapel in Windsor. Lee is music coordinator as well as assistant to the president of the South England Conference.
Time.com reported that the 1961 blues ballad Stand By Me was originally performed by American singer-songwriter Ben E. King, and that, according to music licensing company BMI, it went on the become the fourth most recorded song of the 20th century.
Although it is a hit at weddings, “Stand By Me” also has a political message linked closely to America’s civil rights movement when, according to Time, it was “used as a rallying cry for solidarity amongst people of color.”
Markle is biracial with a mother who is black and a white father. Her marriage to Prince Harry is widely seen as a sign of a more inclusive future for Britain’s Royal Family.
According to the Adventist denomination’s Office of Archives, Statistics and Research, there are 37,519 Adventists in Britain and there are 288 churches.
