Somebody said that "whoever sings, prays twice." That is why, on Saturday, November 30, 2024, the Plaza España station of the Barcelona metro system witnessed a service of praise and worship to God through song. About 15 young people and adults from the churches of Urgell, Clot, Guinardo, Tallers, Badalona, along with Portuguese-speaking members gathered to say goodbye to Sabbath with this sung devotional time, which delighted those who passed by.
The gestation of the idea
In Catalonia, a cultural initiative is being promoted to spread and promote music and culture and in very strategic and sometimes even unlikely places, pianos are placed so that whoever wants to can play it.
At the Plaza España station—one of the busiest due to passers-by and passengers who, in addition to using the metro, transfer to the Catalan railways—there is a beautiful white piano. The novelty, this time, was that a large group of people occupied the space, accompanied by a pianist blessed with God-given musical talent, and joined together to give a voice and message to the scores.
The initiative included Martín Borgna, on the piano, and Esther Gómez, in the musical direction and composition of the pieces performed.
Hundreds of people reached
Music transmits a lot, and the joy that we singers had was also contagious. Some would think that it was just another concert or something to distract them but, behind this initiative, there was prayer and worship.
In the heart of Barcelona, freely praising the living God, hundreds of people passed by, listened, stopped, and asked questions. Some exchanged words, rejoiced, and applauded. And, in all cases, a smile was reflected on their tired faces.
The concert lasted an hour, and we closed with “The Lord’s Prayer” in Catalan, set to a special musical arrangement created by Esther Gómez. A song that could express the validity of those words spoken by Jesus and motivate us to seek God in any circumstance.
