The Adventist Development and Relief Agency in Switzerland - ADRA Switzerland - launched a project at the beginning of March in which refugees are placed in private accommodation, after registering either directly with ADRA Switzerland or with one of the approximately 50 Adventist churches in Switzerland. "To date, we have already been able to place 64 people in private households in this way," explains Monika Stirnimann, ADRA project manager for German-speaking Switzerland.

"The people are infinitely grateful when they find connection and personal contact in families this way. It also provides care and support, which helps these people to find their way with us," said Stirnimann.

"Welcome Package" for the first days from ADRA Switzerland

For the first few days, the refugee families receive financial support from the aid organization until government assistance kicks in. This would allow them to buy the basic necessities. In the first phase, ADRA Switzerland was able to provide financial support to around 180 people. This approach has proven successful, he said. "This support is also a financial relief for the host families," says the project manager.

Hosts and hostesses also take on responsibility

Hosting a refugee family for a longer period can also mean that one bears more responsibility for these people during this period and is also somewhat restricted in one's own personal freedom. Monika Stirnimann points out: "Before you decide to take in someone, you should be aware that you will also be personally required to take care of these people and to accompany them, especially in an initial phase. In addition, many are psychologically burdened by the flight or other experiences triggered by the war. Therefore, ADRA Switzerland accompanies the host families with information." This also includes advice on contact points for various concerns.
