On February 24, 2022, a conflict started in Ukraine that is having devastating humanitarian effects. It led to the displacement of the population, both inside Ukraine and on the borders of neighboring countries. From the first day, the waves of refugees continue to arrive on the Romanian territory, through the open border points. ADRA International, in partnership with ADRA Romania and other regional offices, intervenes in the situation of refugees in Romania, within the project "Hope for Ukraine", assisting with their essential needs.
The beneficiaries of the "Hope for Ukraine" project—which is part of the field of expertise "Assisting the socially disadvantaged"—are Ukrainian refugees, numbering 200,000 people, whose main needs will be met in order to be able to weather the crisis period more easily.
The project "Romania's Initial Response for Refugees in Ukraine", implemented for Ukrainian refugees in Romania, is being carried out for 90 days, starting on February 24, in partnership with ADRA International (funding and coordination office) and ADRA Romania (implementation office).
The objective of "Romania's Initial Response for Refugees in Ukraine", with a total value of 800,000 USD, is to assist a target group of Ukrainian refugees in Romania, approximately 200,000 people. Through the project, refugees receive food and hygiene kits. At the same time, 12,000 vouchers worth approximately 133,000 USD are distributed, with which refugees can buy any products from the supermarket to fulfill their needs.
Within the ADRA Romania project "Hope for Ukraine", three separate lines of cash assistance are identified:
Distribution of social vouchers to refugees
The allocated budget is 133,000 USD and is mostly provided by ADRA Austria, with the contribution of a local sponsor. Within this chapter, 2 social vouchers of about 10 USD each will be distributed per person, with priority at the border points, and also in the refugee centers in the territory.
Coverage of daily allowances and transport of volunteers
The allocated budget is 45,649 USD, starting from a daily amount of 17 USD / volunteer x 61 days of implementation x 45 volunteers / day.
Granting micro-grants to entities involved in helping refugees
The allocated budget is 300,000 USD (gross, including administration costs), which allows the financing of at least 21 entities with amounts between 6,000-12,000 USD, the main beneficiaries being the local churches that have been and are involved in supporting refugees.
"Together with other ADRA country offices and colleagues involved in other projects aimed at supporting refugees in Ukraine, ADRA Romania is trying to bring some relief to people hard-pressed by the vicissitudes of war,” said Dan Constantinescu, ADRA Romania project manager. “The overall objective of the "Hope for Ukraine" project is to address the immediate needs of Ukrainian refugees fleeing the war to save their lives and those of their children at border crossings in Romania and in transit. We are targeting all ten currently active border crossings,” concluded Constantinescu.
