Confronting dementia with music

APD, EUDnews.

On April 20, 2023, a continuing education event on the topic of "Confronting dementia(s) with music" will take place in the auditorium of Friedensau Theological College near Magdeburg. The speakers are Professor Dr. Petra Jürgens and Dr. Regina Lorek. They both teach at the university in the master's programme in music therapy. The event is aimed at prospective therapists, nursing and care staff, and those in social work; target participants also include volunteers in visiting services and in everyday support as well as relatives of people suffering from dementia.

The everyday life of and with people suffering from dementia can present many challenges and experiences of deficits. But when listening to music, people who have forgotten their own name can still remember the sixth verse of a folk song. They are suddenly more alert or more relaxed and can relate experiences, make contact with others and develop a desire to move, says Andrea Cramer from the public relations department at Friedensau University.

Music can be used audibly and playfully to improve the quality of life of dementia patients and the people supporting them. The various possibilities of musical offers will be examined and tried out in the continued education programme focusing on the symptoms of various dementia illnesses and the needs of professional and family support.
