Last Sunday, torrential rains fell on Savoie and Haute-Savoie, causing significant damage and mobilizing emergency services. Collonges-sous-Salève, headquarters of the Salève Adventist campus, was particularly affected by the bad weather.
Firefighter Interventions and Power Cuts
Firefighters were called upon, several times, in the region. In Collonges-sous-Salève, according to information from Franbleu.fr, a nursing home was partially flooded. Thanks to the rapid intervention of emergency services and the installation of a generator, the 80 residents were able to stay on site, in complete safety. The Saint-Vincent private vocational high school and a Buffalo Grill restaurant also suffered flooding, leading to the closure of the school and the technical unemployment of nine employees. In addition, half of the homes in the town were without electricity for several hours.
Closure of the A40 and Disrupted Traffic
Still according to information reported by Francebleu.fr, the A40 motorway, towards Chamonix, was cut off from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m., between Saint-Julien-en-Genevois and Annemasse, following a mudslide. What began as a landslide, occurring at 6:30 p.m., damaged a pipe, spreading mud on both lanes for around fifty meters. Fortunately, no accidents or injuries were reported. Traffic was partially restored around 9:30 p.m. to allow stranded drivers to free themselves. The ATMB has redirected traffic onto the RD1206 due to the persistent closure of the A40, between exits no. 13 and no. 14.
Salève Adventist Campus Affected
The Salève Adventist Campus was also affected by the bad weather. Several facilities, including the Aula Auditorium and the new Jean Weidner Residence, were flooded. The latter welcomed a group of young high school students from the Antilles, who came to discover the places of the Reformation. The youth hostel, located in the basement of the building, was particularly affected, soaking suitcases and personal effects.
Exemplary Solidarity
Despite these floods, no injuries were reported on campus. The Adventist community showed exemplary solidarity, with residents and visitors helping each other to dry their belongings and restore the areas affected by the waters.
The flooding in Collonges-sous-Salève showed the resilience and solidarity of the Adventist community in the face of challenges posed by extreme weather conditions. We hope that the repair work will quickly restore the affected facilities and that life on campus can return to normal.
