ADRA Portugal Mobilizes Support for Leiria Following Storm Kristin

ADRA

In the wake of Storm Kristin, which struck mainland Portugal on the morning of January 28 with winds exceeding 200 km/h, local communities and humanitarian organizations have launched a coordinated relief effort. Despite widespread destruction and power outages, the Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) communities in the Leiria region have transitioned rapidly from emergency response to active recovery and spiritual support.

Resilience Amidst Infrastructure Challenges

On Saturday, January 31, congregations in Gândara dos Oliveirais, Leiria, and São Jorge held special services focused on gratitude and community solidarity. Notably, the SDA Church in Gândara dos Oliveirais conducted its gathering without electricity or mobile network access, emphasizing the resilience of the local members following the most intense climatic event recorded in Portugal in recent years.

In Leiria, the services provided a platform for survivors to share testimonies of the storm’s impact. Many members recounted the severity of the early morning hours of January 28, expressing a profound sense of serenity and faith despite the life-threatening conditions and significant property damage.

Humanitarian Response and ADRA’s Commitment

Carmen Maciel, executive director of ADRA Portugal, visited the affected congregations to formalize the agency’s commitment to long-term assistance. ADRA has officially launched a nationwide campaign to collect essential goods and funds designated specifically for supporting the populations of Leiria and other hard-hit regions.

This institutional support aims to bridge the gap for families facing displacement or severe structural damage to their homes.

Large-Scale Volunteer Mobilization

The recovery effort was further bolstered by the arrival of nearly 100 Pathfinders (youth volunteers) from across the country. Meeting at the Municipal Stadium of Leiria, these volunteers coordinated with city officials to assist in debris removal and logistical support.

Throughout the afternoon, teams of youth and adults worked to: Clear wreckage and fallen trees, transport construction materials, such as roof tiles, to affected neighborhoods, and assist experienced contractors in emergency roof repairs for vulnerable households.

National Impact and Economic Toll

Storm Kristin has left a devastating mark on Portugal. Official reports confirm 10 fatalities directly or indirectly linked to the storm, alongside dozens of injuries. Economic analysts estimate the total material damage to be between €1.5 billion and €2 billion.

While the material losses remain high and infrastructure repairs continue, the spirit of solidarity demonstrated in Leiria serves as a benchmark for the national recovery effort.
