The transition from victim to survivor requires immense courage and specialized support. The case of Irina—a mother of four living with a visual impairment—exemplifies the profound impact of comprehensive intervention. For 18 years, Irina endured a multifaceted spectrum of abuse, including physical, psychological, financial, and cyber violence. Despite these barriers, she successfully sought refuge at Casa ADRA, the Emergency Reception Center for Victims of Domestic Violence.
Since its inception in 2009, ADRA Romania has assisted over 4,026 victims, providing shelter to 1,199 mothers and children. The agency operates as a licensed social service provider under the Ministry of Labor, focusing on the social reintegration of those fleeing domestic abuse.
A Holistic Path to Reintegration
Casa ADRA provides a structured environment where beneficiaries can experience life free from coercion. The center’s methodology includes:
Legal & Medical Assistance: Guidance through divorce, custody, and emergency health needs.
Psychological Support: Specialized counseling to address long-term trauma for both mothers and children.
Professional Development: Vocational training, such as the massage therapy course currently pursued by Irina to achieve financial independence.
Education: Support for survivors returning to high school or higher education to improve their socio-economic standing.
Mariana Roș, a psychologist at ADRA Romania, notes that survivors like Irina demonstrate remarkable resilience, transforming decades of trauma into a dedicated pursuit of dignity and a better life for their children.
